When in doubt, default to creativity
by Matt Cohen in Coaching, Life. 2 min read.

I’ve written on this blog for several years about various topics from coaching to product to WordPress and software development overall. Reviewing posts from the past year, I find it interesting to see how often I default to creativity. Both in when I write, and what I write about. Creating every day, even the smallest creation, fuels me. I find fuel in creativity which sets me up for success through the rest of my day. This post is that fuel.
When looking at a task list or calendar at the beginning of a day, we’re often advised to do something small as a way to build momentum through the day. This is true for me and works 100% of the time. Often times, that “small thing” is not actually on my task list. What is often needed, for me, is to create. So I open my blog where I’m comfortable writing, and I type. Sometimes on a specific topic, and sometimes a stream of consciousness which later turns into a topic. I ask myself what I’m being called to do. Most times, I am being called to create. So I type a blog post, write a snippet of code, or research an idea or concept. From there, I’m set to take on whatever else is needed from me that day.
Writing is creation. There is so much more to it, though. Your favourite journal. Your favourite pen or pencil. Your favourite digital writing space. For me, I prefer a space where I can type without my hands leaving the keyboard. I can format what I write, type without distraction, and let the ideas flow from mind to fingers. I type faster than I write, so typing in an open space is, for me, the clearest path from thoughts to creation. Typing in WordPress is fun and creative. If this were the only goal of Gutenberg, I’d say “objective achieved”.
Creation is powerful. It is the concept of connection. Connecting two or more things or concepts which don’t seem directly connected, or finding a new way to connect things together.
I am at my best when I’m creating. I don’t doubt you are as well.
